Not quite a fungal foray but our thanks to attendees on the Walk, Talk and Ride Festival and who are sending in some inspirational images whilst attending events.
During the quarries and workings event at the northern end of the Sandstone Ridge, this quite splendid image of a fly agaric was spotted.
The fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is a red fungus with white spots. Its bright red cap with white spots and white gills are spectacular. It can grow up to 20cm across and 30cm tall!
The fly agaric can be found in woodlands, parks, and heaths and is visible from late summer to early winter. Always a sign of the transition of the seasons.
Please be mindful that the fly agaric is poisonous and should not be eaten.
