The Delamere Meridian

Some of you have been enquiring about the Delamere Meridian.

We are, in part, reproducing a story we ran back in 2020 and with a new image. We hope you find it interesting.

Hidden away on land belonging to United Utilities and inaccessible to the public, is a trig point; close to which began the mapping of Britain. This humble concrete trig point is swamped by undergrowth and brambles and lies within a United Utilities enclosure BUT this site marks a location vital to the earliest Ordnance Survey maps.

This is the Delamere Meridian, a centre point from which early scale maps were measured and laid out.

Today, the trig point lies adjacent to the round concrete water tank; a sad fate for something that would once have stood commanding the hilltop!
