The Sandstone Ridge Trust is holding a 'Beneath the Ridge — Caves & Mines Workshop' to be held on Monday, 5 November.

Our aims are:

  • to update everyone on our ongoing research into the caves and mines on the Sandstone Ridge, and
  • to plan expeditions to explore some of the lesser-known parts of the Ridge, in search of more cavities.

Highlight of the Workshop, will be our key speaker, Chris Carlon, author of 'The Gallantry Bank Copper Mine, Bickerton, Cheshire',published in the early 1980s. We hope to learn more about minerals in the local sandstone, as well as more about the practice of copper mining. We are also keen to understand and identify any tell-tale signs in the landscape that can lead to a better understanding of its history on the Ridge.

The event will take place in the Craven Room at Tarporley Community Centre, High Street, Tarporley, from 10.30am-3.30pm with a break for lunch.

Please make your own lunch arrangements — there are lots of places to have a quick spot of lunch on Tarporley High Street, but tea and coffee will be provided throughout.

The event is free but numbers are limited so if you wish to attend please contact the Project Organiser, Peter Winn, to reserve a place: peterbrookcottage@gmail.com

We look forward to seeing you.
