Following yesterday's quite remarkable image of the 'Big Freeze', right here on the Sandstone Ridge, we include further photographs taken by Chris Backx and which he has kindly agreed that we might use on the Website today.

These spectacular icicle cascades were the outcome of sub-zero temperatures experienced locally.

Storm Darcy — dubbed the 'Beast from the East 2' — brought a number of weather warnings around the country, leading to travel disruption and the closure of some Covid vaccination centres.

Heavy snowfall in some parts of the country, the freezing over of the River Thames and the lowest temperature recorded in Scotland during the last 26 years (-22.9 degrees Celsius in Braemar), combined to make February 2021 one of the coldest on record.

That said, the 'Beast from the East 2' transformed the Sandstone Ridge as we know it and that remarkable transformation was captured by local resident, Chris Backx — enjoy his further images.
