Rock climbing has long been a significant activity on the Cheshire Sandstone Ridge.
The 2 principal locations are at:
Helsby
- The earliest reference to climbing at Helsby is contained in a book entitled "Some Gritstone Climbs" by J Laycock published in 1913. That book details over twenty climbs at Helsby and describes the Overhanging Crack as '...one of the hardest gritstone climbs in England...'

Frodsham
- Climbing at Frodsham takes place on a series of much smaller outcrops buried in the undergrowth. The 130 or so climbs are short technical problems, which are invariably tackled without ropes. In essence Frodsham is a climbers' gymnasium.
