The 'Big Butterfly Count 2022' results are in.

And, despite quite glorious weather this summer with above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall, there were actually fewer butterflies than ever recorded in the count.

The fine weather may have impacted on the peak count because many butterflies emerged a week or two earlier than normal.

Key points:
*Gatekeeper takes top spot
*Good news for the blues, with increases for Common Blue and Holly Blue
*Garden favourite the Comma making a comeback
*The general decline continues though, with fewer butterflies spotted overall

The message is clear – wildlife-friendly gardens and meadows are a prerequisite for the butterfly population as is the planting of specific butterfly friendly plants.
